Following on from the 90's grunge vibe that hit runways everywhere in 2015, we are starting to see the "skin-is-in" trend moving into unexpected territory. Welcome to the stage, the backless look. Showing off the back is feminine, adds an element of surprise and is the new way to show skin without baring all. Styling a backless look is all about maintaining comfort, ease and effortlessness by using denim to compliment, over-sized shirting, a longer dress or jumpsuit and a crew neck. Showing off this much back means covering up on the front or the legs to balance everything out.
Here are my top 3 ways to wear backless...
Man Style Shirt Back-To-Front
A wardrobe staple styled in a new way - the back-to-front man style shirt is the perfect backless option. Do up the two second last buttons and tie the bottoms together, wearing the top 3-4 buttons open to show off upper back. Pair with denim for a relaxed, thrown on look. I am wearing my boyfriends Industry shirt and old denim cut off's that I live in no matter the season. Bold Silver details pull the look together.
Cutout Detail
Backless doesn't have to mean baring the entire back, risking a wardrobe malfunction or showing bra straps. This dress by Sass and Bide shoes just enough back to be sexy without being too revealing. The cut of the rouched cross over detailing allows for a cross back bra to be hidden and means it is comfortable and wearable while still making a statement.
Look for styles that have cut outs, sheer paneling or interesting details.
V-Back
The v back style is flattering, easily adaptable (you can choose a deep plunging narrow V to make a statement or a wider shorter V to show a hint of the middle back without being OTT. Opt for a jumpsuit to balance the lack of fabric on the back, or a crew neckline to counteract the show of skin on the back.
I found this jumpsuit in an op-shop, it's now become a vintage favourite of mine.
